Girl injured in 'Airsoft' gun shooting
By: MIKE RAYE , Staff writer

A Frisco girl was injured Feb. 21 when she was hit in the shoulder with a projectile fired from an air pistol as she played in Oakbrook Park, near Woodstream Drive and Hickory Street. A Frisco High School student could be charged with a felony and face jail time in the incident.
According to Sgt. Gina McFarlin, public information officer for the Frisco Police Department, the 5-year-old girl and her parents were playing on the ball field when "two juveniles" drove past and one of them fired toward the group in the park. The shot, a plastic "BB," hit the girl in the shoulder and "left a red mark." McFarlin said the girl was wearing a thick dress with a camisole top underneath, which prevented the shot from breaking the skin.

McFarlin said the "shooter" could be charged with injury to a child - a state jail felony that carries a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 180 days in jail. State jail felonies can be punishable by up to two years in jail, according to the state penal code.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 21. But it wasn't until school resource officers (SRO) received the description of the vehicle and its occupants on Feb. 22 that a scouring of Frisco ISD school parking lots uncovered the suspect vehicle at Frisco High School. The air pistol's handle was seen sticking out from under the car seat, McFarlin said, and the suspects identified.

The suspects, questioned by the SRO, said the shooting was an accident and they were "shooting toward the park," McFarlin said.

The girl, although shaken, was not seriously injured, police said.

Airsoft guns fire plastic "BBs" and are made to resemble automatic handguns and machine guns. They are marketed to military enthusiasts as well as people seeking self-defense weapons, according to Airsoft online retailer Strike Back Now.com.

"Even law enforcement officers are often unable to distinguish Airsoft from real steel," the website's welcome page reads. "Never take an Airsoft gun out in public; doing so WILL endanger your life."

According to the Airsoft website, Airsoft pistols fire pellets at 210 feet per second with a range of about 60 yards. They are meant to be sold to people over 18, and the manufacturer says "adult supervision" is required for persons under 18.

According to the police department's records division, this is the first reported incident of someone being shot by an Airsoft gun in Frisco. Although not the real thing, an Airsoft gun can cause serious injury, McFarlin said.

McFarlin said the incident has been handed over to police detectives, who will investigate and determine if the injury to a child charge will be levied against the juvenile.
